It was synthesized as an analogue of the natural product pyridostigmine, which inhibited influenza in mice. 2-Bromo-3-pyridinol binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor at the same site as nicotine and prevents it from being activated by acetylcholine. This drug also inhibits tumor growth and proliferation in vitro and in vivo, showing potent cytotoxicity against carcinoma cells by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 2-Bromo-3-pyridinol has been shown to inhibit Alzheimer's disease in a mouse model of this disorder.
