Product Information
- Propane, 2-methyl-2-(methylthio)-
Butyl methyl sulfide is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. It belongs to the class of aliphatic hydrocarbons and has a molecular formula of CH3SCH2CH3. Synthesis of butyl methyl sulfide can be achieved through a reaction between methyl chloride and methanol, which produces a mixture of products including butyl methyl sulfone. This compound has shown an inhibitory effect on the growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. The inhibition is due to its ability to form conjugates with sulfur-containing amino acids, which results in the inhibition of bacterial ribonucleotide reductase and DNA synthesis. The rate at which this reaction takes place is dependent on the acidity level, with higher levels leading to faster rates of reaction. The activation energy for this process is 19 kcal/mol.
