1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate is an ionic liquid that is soluble in water. It has been used as a coagulant in wastewater treatment and to remove heavy metals from wastewater. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate has been shown to have photochemical properties, which may be due to its ability to absorb light at wavelengths of 300 nm or more. The hydroxyl group on the butyl side chain of this ionic liquid can bind with a hydrogen atom in water. The hydrogen bonding interactions between the hydroxyl group and the hydrogen atom allow for high values of constant pressure. Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is a polar solvent that can dissolve this ionic liquid.
