n-Butyl sulphide is a chemical compound that is used in the production of rubber, paint, and plastic. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. The kinetic data for n-butyl sulfide have been obtained from fluorescence spectroscopy, which has shown that the reaction mechanism for this compound involves an elimination of hydrogen sulfide. This elimination is followed by an acid-base reaction to form dibutyl sulfide. Dibutyl sulfide can be used as a fluorescent probe for identifying inflammatory bowel disease and bowel disease in mice. It has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in rats with inflammatory bowel disease.
