It is an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, which has been shown to be effective in treating Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. 2-Bromophenol has been shown to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in human serum and mitochondrial membrane potential, as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It also inhibits the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds during the catalytic cycle of acetylcholinesterase.
