It is a potent ligand for the human melanin receptor, which mediates the biological effects of melanin in humans. 2-Bromo-3-methylbenzonitrile has been shown to modulate the activity of this receptor and can be used as a research tool to identify other receptor ligands. This compound has also been shown to have an affinity for the benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[e]pyrene receptors, which are found in animals. The localization of these receptors has been investigated using an animal model.
