4-Bromo-2-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine is a photosensitiser that has been widely used in the production of carboxylates, halides, and alcohols. It is generated by the reaction of 4-bromo-2-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine with sodium methoxide in methanol. The functional groups of 4-bromo-2-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine are bromine, carbon and hydrogen. This compound can be used as a cross-coupling agent for reductive elimination reactions. It is also used to produce alcohols from carboxylic acids via a stepwise process that involves transfer hydrogenation and catalytic hydrogenation.
