4-Methyl-benzenebutanoic acid is an organic compound with the formula CH(COCH). It is a colorless, water-soluble liquid. The molecule consists of a benzene ring with two methyl groups at opposite positions on the ring. 4-Methyl-benzenebutanoic acid can be prepared by nitration of 4-methylbenzoic acid followed by hydrolysis of the nitronium salt. It is used as a precursor to various other compounds such as butyraldehyde, butyl acetate, and butyl nitrate. The chemical also forms adducts with lactic acid and propionic acid in addition to producing yields of lactones when heated with diols.
