Boc-L-alpha-aminobutyric acid is an analog of the amino acid glutamic acid, which is biologically active. Boc-L-alpha-aminobutyric acid can be synthesized by chlorinating butanoic acid in a reaction mixture with glycine, followed by removal of the carboxyl group. The depsipeptide structure is then obtained by peptide bond formation between the terminal amino acids and glycine. Boc-L-alpha-aminobutyric acid has been shown to have ophthalmic activity and is used as an analog for glycolic acid. It also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit glutathione reductase and produce glycolic acid.
