Description:S-Benzyl-D-cysteine is a chemical compound that is found in the brain and has neuroprotective properties. It is an antioxidant and may protect neurons from oxidative injury. S-Benzyl-D-cysteine also has neuroprotective effects in animal models of chronic oral toxicity, which may be due to its ability to activate growth factors. The mechanism of this neuroprotection is unclear, but it may involve homologous protein synthesis or increased expression of proteins that have physiological functions such as amide hydrolase. S-Benzyl-D-cysteine has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in cultured rat hepatocytes and human lymphocytes, but not in cultured rat astrocytes or human kidney cells.
