Barium nitrate is a chemical compound that contains the elements barium and nitrogen. It is an inorganic solid that is insoluble in water. Barium nitrate has been used as a pigment for glass, ceramics, and paints. The compound has also been used as a catalyst to produce polymers. In addition, it has been used to create ceramics and enamelware. Barium nitrate can be made by reacting anhydrous sodium or potassium dichromate with barium carbonate or nitrate at high temperatures. The reaction mechanism of this process involves the decomposition of the dichromate ion into chromous ions and oxygen gas (O2). This process produces heat which causes the barium carbonate or nitrate to decompose into barium oxide (BaO) and nitrogen gas (N2). The product of this reaction is BaO(s) + N2(g) → BaO(s) + N2(g).
