(S)-(-)-1,1'-Binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine is a molecule that exhibits anti-cancer activity. It has been shown to inhibit fatty acid biosynthesis and may be useful in the treatment of cancer. (S)-(-)-1,1'-Binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine is synthesized from 1,4-naphthoquinone and 2,2'-bipyridine by reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid in methanol. The structure of this molecule was elucidated using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. The detection sensitivity of this molecule was found to be ˜10% lower than that of the reference compound benzene. This molecule also reacts as an intramolecular hydrogen bond acceptor in the crystal structure determination process. The mechanism for this reaction is believed to be via a concerted pericyclic process.
