Tert-butylamine can be synthesized by reacting methylamine with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. This reaction produces tert-butylamine as well as hydrogen gas and formaldehyde. The formaldehyde can be removed by heating the mixture at high temperatures while distilling off the excess water.
