(S)-4-Benzyloxy-1,2-butanediol is a chiral diol that can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of carbonates. The reaction system is optically active and can be cyclized to form a five-membered ring or a six-membered ring. Chiral hydrolysis can occur when (S)-4-benzyloxy-1,2-butanediol reacts with an acid. The enatioselectivity and enantioselectively depend on the substituents on the molecule. This compound has been shown to inhibit pancreatic lipase in porcine pancreatic tissue preparations. It also has potential use in screening for new drugs that inhibit protein synthesis enzymes such as ribonucleotide reductase and protein kinases.
