It was originally synthesized by reacting triethyl orthoformate with 2,6-diisopropylaniline. This reaction formed the corresponding imidazolium salt. The synthesis of this compound was later improved by using ring-opening polymerization of glycolide and furfural. 1,3-Bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolium chloride is mainly used to extract estradiol from urine samples in clinical laboratories.
