It can be used to catalyze the dehydrogenation of alkenes and alkynes to form alcohols. This compound has been shown to react with magnesium oxide (MgO) to produce melanocarpa (CHClO). 1,6-Bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane has been shown to react with an aryl chloride in the presence of boron nitride (BN) or supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2). The reaction product was identified by x-ray crystallography and nmr spectroscopy as 2-(2'-chloroethyl)-1,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane.
