1,2-Butanedithiol is a monosubstituted molecule that has a linear response to the presence of gold nanoparticles. 1,2-Butanedithiol is able to stabilize gold nanoparticles by hydrogen bonding and can also be used to synthesize gold nanoparticles. The ligands on the pyridine ring in 1,2-butanedithiol are capable of binding with metal ions such as copper or silver. This stabilizes the metal particle and prevents aggregation. The fatty acid groups on 1,2-butanedithiol are used for modeling complexes that contain one or two ligands. These models show how intramolecular hydrogen bonds may occur in nature and may provide insights into how molecules function.
