9-Bromofluorene (9BF) is a fluorinated aromatic hydrocarbon that reacts with metal carbonyls in the presence of Friedel-Crafts type reagents to form 9-bromofluorenylidene. The bifluorenylidene can be reduced to picolinic acid, which is an important intermediate for the synthesis of nucleophilic drugs. 9BF has been shown to react with nucleophiles such as amines and thiols at the carbon atoms adjacent to the bromine substituents, forming a covalent bond. This reaction has been used in the synthesis of a number of drugs, including trifluoroacetylproline and fluoxetine. 9BF also reacts with light emitting devices, producing light emission. This fluorescent property makes it an ideal candidate for use as a molecular probe for detection of target lesions. It is also used as a skin contact sensitizer because it causes skin reactions
