4-Benzylbiphenyl is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of biphenyls. It is an isomeric form of biphenyl and has a hydroxyl group at one end. 4-Benzylbiphenyl can be synthesized from phenol and benzene via Friedel-Crafts reaction. This compound may be found in natural sources, such as plants, but its concentration is low. When exposed to neutrons, 4-benzylbiphenyl undergoes the Nitrosonium ion (NO+) reaction and yields nitrobenzene. The chloride ion present in this reaction induces constitutive activation of androstane receptor, which leads to a response pathway that regulates animal health.
