Bis(4-nitrophenyl) sulfone is an antimicrobial agent that has a sulfonic acid group and a nitro group. It is used to inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and algae. The bis(4-nitrophenyl) sulfone molecule has two hydrogen bonding interactions with the anhydrous sodium molecule in which this molecule is bound to one of the oxygen atoms. Bis(4-nitrophenyl) sulfone also binds to the sulfur atom in the x-ray structure of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme inhibitor complex with the enzyme by competitive inhibition, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
