4-Bromo-2-methylbenzoic acid is a nucleophilic compound that can be used for the synthesis of esters, amides and peptides. It is also an intermediate in the synthesis of 4-bromo-2-methylbenzoic acid methyl ester, which can be used as a cardiac marker. The hydroxylamine group on this molecule reacts with electrophiles such as benzoate to form bromoacetic acid derivatives. This reaction is catalyzed by palladium and other metals. The multidimensional nature of this reaction means it can be used for cross-coupling reactions.
