Betulin diacetate is a natural compound that can be found in plants such as the bark of birch trees. It is an ester of betulin and acetic acid. Betulin diacetate is activated by the water vapor in air to release glycosidic bonds, which are broken by hydrolysis to produce betulonic acid. The hydroxyl group on the molecule is acetylated by acetic anhydride, which produces betulonic acid diacetate. Betulin diacetate has been shown to have anti-cancer properties and it has also been used as a monoclonal antibody against human CD4+.
