It is also used in the synthesis of nucleophiles, synthons and amaryllidaceae alkaloids. 2-Bromo-4,5-dimethoxybenzyl alcohol reacts with lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) to produce an aryllithium compound that is used as a nucleophile in organic synthesis reactions. This alcohol can be converted to an arene by reaction with carbon monoxide gas.
