4-Bromo-3-formylindole is a synthetic formyl compound that inhibits the adenosine A3 receptor. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the binding of the neurotransmitter, nicotine, to its receptor. 4-Bromo-3-formylindole was synthesized in order to identify novel ligands for the adenosine A3 receptor. This molecule has also been shown to have inhibitory effects on marine organisms, such as cephalopods and tunicates. 4-Bromo-3-formylindole can be found in natural products such as aplysinopsin from aplysina sponges and cinnamyl alcohol from cinnamon bark.
