5-Bromo-2-chloronicotinic acid is an organic ester. It is a colorless to pale yellow solid that is soluble in water and alcohol. 5-Bromo-2-chloronicotinic acid has been used as an intermediate for the synthesis of other esters. It can be synthesized by reacting aniline with thionyl chloride, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting chloroacetyl chloride with sodium hydroxide solution. This compound can also be synthesized by reacting chlorides with acid chlorides. 5-Bromo-2-chloronicotinic acid has been used to identify the presence of bromine in the molecular structure of compounds such as ethyl bromide or phenyl bromide, which are commonly found in spectra analyses. The elemental analysis technique can be used to identify this ester in samples containing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen by measuring their respective weights and calculating the percent
