1,4-Bis(2-methylstyryl)benzene is a fluorescent compound that emits light when irradiated with radiation. The emission of light is proportional to the amount of energy absorbed by the molecule and is inversely proportional to the distance between the molecule and the detector. The fluorescence properties of 1,4-bis(2-methylstyryl)benzene are sensitive to changes in pH, salt concentration, and polymer film thickness. This compound has been used as a fluorescence probe for low energy radiation and can be used as an optical property monitor for high salt concentrations or as an indicator of solute concentration in polymer films.
