Tert-butyl trifluoroacetate (TBTA) is a nucleophilic alkylating agent that can be used to produce ethylene, alcohols, anisoles, isobutene, and other compounds. It is relatively stable in the presence of water and air. TBTA has a high yield of 90% and reacts quickly with activated chloride to produce tert-butyl chloride. The reaction proceeds through acidolysis at temperatures between 0°C and 50°C. TBTA also produces a kinetic product with an acid catalyst that can be used for kinetic studies.
