Monocerin is an integrase inhibitor that belongs to the class of stereoselective inhibitors. It binds to the active site of the integrase enzyme, blocking DNA synthesis and inhibiting bacterial growth. Monocerin is a fatty acid with a hydroxyl group at the 3-position and a methyl group at the 4-position. The methyl group forms a covalent bond with the hydroxyl group, resulting in two stereoisomers: (1) monocerin A and (2) monocerin B. Monocerin A has been shown to be more potent than monocerin B as an inhibitor of HIV integrase activity, but both are effective against HIV-1 integrase. Monocerin A has also been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro.
