Trimethoprim Related Compound B is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Trimethoprim Related Compound B has shown inhibitory effects on the growth of Escherichia coli and Lactuca sativa (lettuce). Trimethoprim Related Compound B also has been shown to have a dry weight loss inhibition effect on lettuce. The test solution was prepared by adding acetonitrile to a stock solution of sulfamethoxazole in water. Trimethoprim Related Compound B was quantified by monitoring the elution from an HPLC column with detection at 240 nm. The testing was performed using electrospray ionization with detection at 220 nm.
