It can be used for the removal of phenolic acids from water by means of ion exchange or adsorption. 3-Chlorophenol is also used as a starting material for diazonium salts, which are important intermediates in the synthesis of dyes, photographic chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The reaction mechanism for this compound begins with the formation of a copper complex. This complex can then react with hydrogen peroxide to form an activated species (hydroxyl radical) that reacts with nitrous acid to form a reactive nitrogen species (nitroxide). The nitroxide reacts with the aromatic ring, displacing chloride and releasing hydroxyl groups to form 3-chlorophenol.
