3-Cyano-4-methylpyridine is a compound that belongs to the class of imine. It is an acidic, condensation product of an aldehyde and an amine. 3-Cyano-4-methylpyridine can be synthesized from 2-methylimidazole and ethyl acetate in vitro at temperatures below -78°C. This compound has shown promising results in vitro for use as a possible antiviral agent against HIV, with research suggesting it may inhibit the replication of HIV by binding to the viral dna and inhibiting its synthesis.
