3-Chloro-1,2-propanediol (3CPD) is a diol that has been studied extensively for its potential use as an analytical reagent. 3CPD is used in wastewater treatment and as a preservative in cosmetics. The bound form of 3CPD can be measured by the reaction with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to produce formaldehyde and ammonium chloride. It has been shown to have toxicological effects on the kidney, liver, heart, and testes. 3CPD may also be genotoxic. It inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential by binding to the lipid bilayer and alters energy metabolism in cells by inhibiting ATP synthase activity.
