5-Chloro-7-methylisatin is an azomethine heterocycle, a class of compounds with a nitrogen atom in the ring. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of staphylococcus by acting as a competitive inhibitor of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. 5-Chloro-7-methylisatin also shows minimal inhibitory concentrations against bacterial strains that are resistant to other antibiotics, such as penicillin and erythromycin. This compound binds to the active site of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing them from binding to DNA or interacting with other enzymes. The chlorine atoms in this molecule may act as electron withdrawing groups and provide some degree of regioselectivity. 5-Chloro-7-methylisatin can exist in two isomers: cis (Z) and trans (E). The cis form is shown to have better antibacterial activity than the trans form
