Cyclopentanone is a cyclic ketone that has been synthesized in an asymmetric manner. The synthesis starts with the reaction of phosphotungstic acid and cyclopentanol to give a mixed anhydride. This mixed anhydride reacts with methylene chloride or chloroform to produce the desired product, cyclopentanone.
