Cholic acid is a naturally occurring bile acid that binds to the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and is involved in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism. Cholic acid has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in mice, which may be due to its ability to activate FXR. Cholic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). This drug also has a matrix effect on polymerase chain reactions (PCRs), which protects DNA from degradation during amplification. Cholic acid is also an important component of nanoparticulate compositions for use in biological applications.
