Cloransulam-methyl is an herbicide that belongs to the group of diphenyl ethers. It is a broad-spectrum herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by interfering with essential plant enzymes. Cloransulam-methyl can be applied as a preplanting or postemergence herbicide and has been shown to be effective against weeds, such as Solanum tuberosum, when applied at high salt concentrations. The product also has been found to be active against resistant strains of plants, such as those that are resistant to glyphosate or other herbicides. Cloransulam-methyl needs to be applied in conjunction with a surfactant (such as triethanolamine) to penetrate the waxy outer layer of leaves and stems. The product is not toxic for humans and animals, but it may have negative effects on aquatic organisms in areas where it is used.
