- 3-Picoline, 6-chloro-
- Pyridine, 2-chloro-5-methyl-
2-Chloro-5-methylpyridine is a byproduct of the chlorination of methyl ethyl chloride. It is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor. 2-Chloro-5-methylpyridine is used in the treatment of wastewater, which can be contaminated with organic compounds and heavy metals. The reaction takes place at a high temperature and pressure to remove these pollutants from the water. The hydrogen chloride that is produced during this process reacts with 2-chloro-5-methylpyridine to produce 2,6 dichloropyrimidine and hydrochloric acid. This reaction yields a yield of 73% of the theoretical amount.
