3-Chromanecarboxylic acid is a potent inhibitor of protein kinases. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, including breast and prostate cancer cells. 3-Chromanecarboxylic acid inhibits the activity of protein kinases by binding to the ATP site on the enzyme, thereby preventing ATP from binding and inhibiting phosphorylation. 3-Chromanecarboxylic acid also inhibits salt compound transport across cell membranes, which may be due to its ability to form ionic bonds with anions (e.g., Cl-, Br-, I-). 3-Chromanecarboxylic acid is pharmacologically active in an acidic environment and has been shown to inhibit ion transport through ion channels in glaucoma patients. This drug is metabolized quickly into ammonium salts in vivo and has been shown to have a high potency for inhibiting protein kinases.
