Cinnamyl bromide is a cinnamyl compound that reacts with trifluoroacetic acid to form an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of methionine adenosyltransferase, which is involved in the methylation process, and has been shown to have anti-infective properties. The reaction mechanism of cinnamyl bromide is not fully known, but it has been suggested that the hydroxyl group may react with the carboxylic acid groups of proteins, leading to the formation of a more reactive product. Cinnamyl bromide has also been shown to be a substrate for P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and can be used to allylate proteins.
