2-Cyano-N,N-dimethylacetamide is a synthetic liquid that is used as an additive in hydrocarbon solvents. It reacts with hydrogen chloride to produce 2-cyanopyridine and hydrogen gas. The reaction yield is dependent on the amount of pyridine present. This product can be prepared by reacting 2-chloroacetic acid with dimethylamine in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The product will react with water to form hydrochloric acid, which can be removed by distillation or recrystallization.
