Chebulinic acid is a natural compound that is found in the fruit of Terminalia chebula. There are a number of studies that have shown significant cytotoxicity against human cancer cells, with one study demonstrating an IC50 of 0.5 micrograms/mL. Chebulinic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by damaging their DNA, which prevents them from replicating and dividing. It also inhibits polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. Ellagic acid, tellimagrandin, and tannins are other compounds found in Terminalia chebula that have been shown to have anticancer activities as well as anti-inflammatory effects. These compounds are thought to be responsible for the significant cytotoxicity observed in some studies with chebulinic acid.
