It is a prodrug that is converted by the body into cyclopropylmethylene hydrazine (CHM), a neurotoxic compound. CHM is a stereoisomer of methylenecyclopropane, which binds to the enzyme succinic dehydrogenase, thereby inhibiting electron transport and generating reactive oxygen species. Cyclopropylhydrazine dihydrochloride has been shown to be medically effective against cancer cells in cell culture experiments. It also has been shown to reduce levels of amyloid-β peptides in mice with Alzheimer's disease.
