The thermal expansion coefficient of 2-chloroethanol is about 3.8 times greater than water and 3 times greater than ethanol. This property makes it useful for sample preparation during thermogravimetric analysis. 2-Chloroethanol can also be used as a probe molecule in pharmacokinetics studies to measure body mass index (BMI). It has been shown that 2-chloroethanol can affect signal pathways related to cell proliferation and apoptosis through MAPKs activation and signal transduction pathways.
