2-Chloro-5-methoxyphenol is a synthetic compound that is used as a herbicide and fungicide. It is an electron donor and can oxidize organic material. The molecule of 2-chloro-5-methoxyphenol has two chlorines, four methoxy groups, one benzene ring, and one oxygenated group (muconic acid). This compound can be synthesized from 4-chlorophenol by exposure to radiation. 2-Chloro-5-methoxyphenol was first prepared in 1872 by the Russian chemist Aleksandr Butlerov. The synthesis of this molecule was analyzed using argon gas.
