Chrysamine G disodiumsalt (CGDS) is a fluorescent dye that has been used for the diagnosis of amyloid-related diseases. CGDS is a cell-permeable dye that binds to amyloid protein and causes it to fluoresce under ultraviolet light. It can be used to determine the presence of amyloid deposits in tissue, such as the occipital cortex. Amyloid deposits are associated with Alzheimer's disease, other forms of dementia, and Down syndrome. CGDS may be useful in the treatment of these diseases because it binds to amyloid protein and prevents its aggregation into plaque formations.
