Celite is a porous, granular material that has been used as an adsorbent and filter medium for the separation of particles from fluids. It is made of aluminum silicate with small amounts of other substances such as sodium, calcium, or iron oxide. Celite is chemically inert and has a high surface area. The redox potential of celite depends on the amount of zirconium oxide in the material. This property can be used to remove oxygen from human serum or to purify water vapor by removing dissolved gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. Celite can also be used to separate biological materials using surface methodology. Histological analysis shows that celite filters can remove cellular components such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and other macromolecules without altering their structure. A nutrient solution containing benzimidazole compounds was found to have high values when filtered through celite due to its ability to bind these molecules through hydrogen bonding interactions.
