Cymarin is a natural compound that has significant cytotoxicity. It belongs to the group of polyphenols and is an amorphous substance. Cymarin can be extracted from plants such as the corn lily (Veratrum album). Cymarin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in several animal models, including those for autoimmune diseases. The mechanism of action is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to receptor cells or α subunit of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Cymarin also inhibits the activity of p-glycoprotein (P-gp), which may be due to its effect on the matrix effect.
