Cerium(III) chloride is a halide. It is prepared by the reaction of cerium(III) oxide with hydrochloric acid and water. This reagent can be used to synthesize organocerium compounds. Cerium(III) chloride is also used in the preparation of lanthanides and as an anti-markovnikov agent for the synthesis of 2-halopropyl chlorides from 1,3-dichloroallenes.
