3-Chloro-2-butanone is a reaction product that is formed when glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) is inhibited by lithium chloride. GSK3 is an enzyme that phosphorylates glycogen synthase, which regulates the synthesis of glycogen. The reaction mechanism of this product has been shown to be due to the hydrogenation of 3-chlorobutanol and subsequent dehydration to form the ketone. This transformation can be catalyzed by copper chloride in the presence of water vapor, or by a solid-phase synthesis using chloride as a reactant. In addition, 3-chloro-2-butanone can be formed from 2,2,2-trichloroethanol via a two step process with an intermediate molecule. The activation energies for these reactions are
