Cerulenin is a chemical compound that inhibits the synthesis of fatty acid in cells. It has been found to be effective for the treatment of bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Cerulenin is a member of the class of chemical inhibitors called alkylphosphonic acids and acts as an inhibitor of ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1). This inhibition prevents phosphatidylcholine from being exported from cells, leading to an accumulation of lipids in the cell membrane. The accumulation of lipids leads to changes in cell shape, loss of adhesion, and death. Cerulenin also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
